BitMEX to Shut Down on Sept. 23, 2026 After 11 Years

BitMEX will close on Sept. 23, 2026 after owner HDR Global Trading Limited chose to wind down the exchange following a strategic review. Users are urged to close positions and withdraw funds.

BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange owned by HDR Global Trading Limited, will cease operations on Sept. 23, 2026 following a strategic review that concluded with a plan to close the business.
The operator has begun a transition period for clients to wind down activity. Deposits and withdrawals remain available during this process, and customers are being asked to close open positions and remove balances ahead of the shutdown.
“We want to reassure you that your assets remain fully safe and under your control during this transition period,” a notice to users stated.
BitMEX credits its platform with popularizing perpetual swap contracts, which let traders speculate on asset prices without expiration dates. The company reports no instances of customer funds lost to hacks during its 11 years of operation.
Founded in 2014, the exchange became known for large-scale crypto derivatives trading. Its closure highlights how platform risk and exchange selection remain important considerations in cryptocurrency trading. Further updates on the wind-down are expected as the timeline progresses.
